May 16 (Sat) & 17 (Sun), 2026 – A 2-day event!
A special stage will be set up inside Goryokaku Park, featuring the long-awaited return of the “Hijikata Toshizo Contest.” After its final edition in 2024, the contest is back by popular demand. Enjoy a wide range of performances, including sword-fighting theater, brass band concerts, and thrilling demonstrations using real swords.

AnTime: memorial service for those who lost their lives in the Hakodate War, the final battle of the Boshin War, is held prior to the Hakodate Goryokaku Festival.
Along with the forecast dates for cherry blossom blooming and full bloom at Goryokaku, we introduce the changing stages of the cherry blossoms, from buds to blooming, full bloom, and finally the green leaf stage, on our website and Facebook.

This festival is held in order to spread the knowledge and history of Goryokaku, the stage of the Boshin War (1868-1869).

A memorial service is held annually to recognize the war dead of the Battle of Hakodate, known as the last battle of the Boshin War.
Our Facebook page shows the state of cherry blossoms at Goryokaku from budding, flowering, and full bloom to cherry trees with green leaves.

Come watch our nearly 12-meter-long koi-nobori windsocks swimming pleasantly in the sky about 70 meters from the ground.🎏

July 7th is the day of the Tanabata Festival.
It is customary to hang colorful pieces of paper written with wishes and decorations on bamboo branches (called tanzaku) to wish upon the stars.

The atrium located on the first level of the Goryokaku Tower is decorated with illumination lights to create a magical atmosphere suitable for the Hoshi no Yume Festival.

Hoshi no Yume Illumination is an event where the moat around Goryokaku is illuminated with nearly 2,000 lights to create a star-shaped illumination. Goryokaku is lit daily during the period.
*Please note that due to renovation work on the Goryokaku Rear Gate Bridge this year, the illumination will be moved to the outside of the moat.
*Please note that the Goryokaku Tower closed at 6 p.m.
