July 7 is Tanabata, the Star Festival. In most parts of Japan, people celebrate by decorating bamboo branches and writing wishes on colorful strips of paper. In Hakodate, however, there is a unique tradition called “Rōsoku Morai” (Candle Gathering). On the evening of Tanabata, children go from house to house singing a traditional song and receive candles or sweets in return. It is one of the most anticipated events for children in Hakodate.

Goryokaku Tower will hold the Tanabata Festival 2026 from July 1 (Wed) to July 7 (Tue).
